The Traveller's Log is a spoiler-safe reading companion to The Time Machine by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895 and now in the public domain. It follows the novel through all sixteen chapters and the epilogue, one stop at a time, in about half an hour. At each stop you guess what happens before reading our short summary, answer a quick quiz to earn points and badges, and weigh in on the book's big debates.
An AI guide can answer your questions along the way, but it only knows the stops you have already revealed, so it cannot spoil what comes next. The summaries, questions and illustrations are our own.
Wells's short novel gave the language the phrase time machine and set the pattern for a century of time-travel stories. Its vision of the far future, with the gentle Eloi above ground and the Morlocks below, is also a sharp piece of social criticism, and its ending, at the edge of a dying world, still unsettles readers. If you would rather read about the book than walk through it, our guide to The Time Machine explained covers the story and what it means, and our reader's map of science fiction shows where it sits in the genre.
